the road trip thoughts day 1

We left Detroit around 2 AM to make it in time to get a camping spot at the coveted Sleeping Bear Dunes campground. David listen to some study thing on the esophagus for like 3 hours and I wove in and out of sleep. The sun was coming up as we drove through the glory of northern Michigan. The grass glistened with dew, the lakes were still, the sun brought forth a beautiful haze of colors that were especially accented with the lingering fog.

Leaving Detroit felt both freeing and melancholic. I've longed to return to Arizona since we found out we were moving, but I also learned to fully love and embrace Detroit while we were there... it took a little while... and the couple who helped usher us into life in Michigan also helped usher us out...

In true Dale style- we were able to get a camping spot because he put his truck in line around midnight so David just had to jump in and then around 7:30 had us a spot reserved. Sleeping Bear Dunes is so beautiful. I don't even think words can do it justice....

we woke up one morning to deer in our campsite

Sleeping Bear was a really special way to start our trip home because we were able to camp with such a loving, thoughtful, kind, and enjoyable family. The kids really enjoyed each other. It took us several days to really get the hang of camping and to realize that we really won't going back to Detroit....  so those first few were precious days enjoying the beauty that is Michigan... Little did we know that the beauty of this country would only prove itself more amazing, more breathtaking, more enjoyable than I imagined.
