Our amazing lil' sis!

So David's sister, Caroline is amazing. Yep, you first heard it here. :) She sang out our wedding- Be Thou My Vision- and made me cry. This girl has really been given a gift! So she sang at this Mariachi thing in Tucson and you can watch it here. If you don't want to watch all the performers, go to the very end and go backwards- she's the last one they show. The only Mexican blondey singing that day.

Anyway, she'll give you goosebumps.

it'll grow back...a funny story about love from the crazies

So I donated my hair to a local charity called Wigs 4 Kids. I thought my hair would be past my shoulders.... So the lady cut it and it wasn't so bad, but as she started styling it kept getting shorter and shorter and shorter until it was REALLY short. I was excited leaving the salon- after all everyone was congratulating my selfless decision. :) Arriving home to dry and style was a different situation- I realized how short it is and that I don't really like it so short. I do keep reminding myself it's only hair and it'll grow back. :)

So my husband in his heartfelt attempt to make me feel better said he would cut his hair! So I fall asleep on the couch (sort of because I am watching Bentley and you never fully fall asleep) and I keep thinking, what is taking him so long!!?!? So he's in the shower and when he gets out all his hair is gone! Apparently his razor broke and so he had to bic it. Before the bic he had these horrible patches of hair on his head. I should've taken a picture so you would see that the lack of hair is better than what it was!

My face says how I really feel!

After David was all cleaned up he went to get Bentley who started WAILING and would not stop! I had to rescue him from his daddy!!!!! Wouldn't you be scared too? Poor kid l "lost" both his parents in one day.

Words of encouragement are accepted as we already feel ridiculous enough!!!

I guess we are rebelling against the long haired hippie movement. :)

some funny videos

So I am up early on a Saturday morning and after Jane's post of a video from failblog.org I decided to look at the site. So I have selected some funny videos for your enjoyment. :)

What is a hippie commune anyway?

So I have been thinking... that you all must think we are crazy to move into a house with 2 single guys and a married couple. It's not normal, we realize that. You are not the only one thinking it! So to welcome you into our excitement I decided I better blog about this whole thing. Unfortunately for you I am not very articulate and it takes me 10 words for what it takes David to say in 4. :) But I will try to convey the heart behind this decision so that you can be joyous in our decision and step away from judgment... just kidding, I know you aren't sitting around saying, "Can you believe what David and Adrienne are doing again!?!?!?"

HIPPIE COMMUNE:
A dramatic name to describe intentional communal living. (I know what you are thinking... David and Adrienne... dramatic... never! (Remember our slogan for our BBQ to welcome Spring last year... Pagan Party!) So don't get scared away because of our labels.)

Is it Biblical? Jesus didn't say, "Move into a big house with a group of your Christian brothers (and sisters) and love one another well." But He didn't say not to. :)He did, however, say the following things which are quite important in thinking about living in community:

Be kind and compassionate to one another; forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Eph. 4:32

Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness and humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you have have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do in word or deed, do it all in the name of the lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:12-17

Dear Children, let us not love with words or tongue, but with actions and truth.
1 John 3: 18

We are going to have the opportunity to live out those verses. I am definitely going to fail to love my housemates well, but as I memorize them and remind myself of the truth behind love, I hope to learn what it means to really live among fellow believers- share in their joys, pains, disappointments, and in their lives in general.

WHY NOT GET SOME HOUSES ON A BLOCK AND LIVE NEXT DOOR:
Great question.
So the current situation of 4 of the housemates is this: hospital rotations for the next 1-2 years (Leigh only has 1 year because she's in PA school-Physicians Assistant) meaning the range of work will be 40-110 hours a week.) As a stay at home mom that meant a lot of alone time with Bentley and we thought it best to be in a communal living situation for the benefit of me being able to be around people. For Chris, Leigh, and Scott it meant not going home to an empty house. The 6th mate, Micah, is an engineer for GM and doesn't want to live alone anymore. Renting 4 houses or apartments doesn't make sense for the above reasons + economically it really doesn't make sense.

SO DO YOU SHARE EVERYTHING?
We each have our own bedrooms and other than Scott's tiny room- the rooms are large and have enough space for more than our beds, but also a desk or futon or both... depending on how we want to fit our things. But other than our bedrooms, yes, we share everything.
We have made extensive lists on the things that each person is bringing to contribute- in the kitchen, living room, etc... Bringing such items to share means that they will get used a lot and might get broken... which means a lesson in not holding on to stuff. I think Jesus taught us something about that... "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven where moth and rust do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21

DO YOU EAT ALL YOUR MEALS TOGETHER?
We will make a large grocery list that meets the needs for everyone's meal desires... specific cereals and lunch items, and then a dinner meal plan will be made for the week. We have a large calendar in the kitchen where people can say if they'll be home for dinner, if any friends are coming over, and if they want to volunteer to cook.... otherwise, yours truly, will be doing most of the cooking. :) (Which I am happy and thankful to do).

HOW ABOUT MONEY? So we are opening up a joint checking account where we will all put in X amount of dollars to pay for groceries, rent, and utilities.

HOW WILL YOU DEAL WITH CONFLICT? Henri Nouwen in his book, Lifesigns, discusses this issue. I can't quote it because I lent my book out to a friend. But he talks about in relationships we can't hold on too loosely and not love people well, but we can't hold on too tightly as to not address our conflicts openly for fear of damaging the relationship... but there is a constant need to find the middle. I know we will fail with this regularly, but we do have one plan in place, thanks to my role model community house... the Seneca House in Tucson, AZ- they have lived in community for 10.5 years! We will have weekly dinners as a family to discuss any issues that are going on in the house and pray for our desire to live together and minister together. If there aren't any issues to address we'll play games or have Micah get out his guitar and sing some songs- or take a walk around the neighborhood....

This has been a slow, thought out process- our hippie commune- we presented the idea to friends a year ago- sort of joking- and God has formed our hearts to prepare for the house. David and I imagined living in community a couple years ago- but the time wasn't right. We prayed for specific things in a home- and God answered our prayers. :) We are the most random group of people, but we all have one thing in common- We love the Lord, have a heart for the broken in Detroit, and long to be in community.

So look forward to reading about the joys, struggles, and comedies of living in a home of 6 people and a baby. And pray for us as you think of it.

Oh and here's some pictures of our housemates:
Scott, Chris and Leigh, and Micah. :) I'll have a picture of all of us soon!

Me, the crier and other updates

Lots of cool things happening here in Detroit. David and I are both being dicipled- Lisa disciples me and Matt disciples David. They are great. They were missionaries in Mexico for a couple years so we have a lot in common. Also, they are the leaders of our small group- which include another 2 couples. We now have a Sunday service at 11 AM. I really like it. Eric is a really good pastor. He's very good at what he does. :) I am going to be teaching the 4th-6th grade Sunday school once a month, so that's exciting. We are using the Desiring God ministries for kids by John Piper. I haven't seen the curriculum yet, but I will be teaching in 2 weeks- so I better get on that! Also, I am starting a Mama Club (Mack Ave Moms Alive in Christ. :) on Wednesday from 10-12 at our place. Bentley is the oldest of 6 babies in our church- plus there are many other young children. So we'll be connecting to love on our kiddos and talk about issues that are linked to motherhood- food, diapers, discipline, how to raise our children in a Godly way, etc... I am soooo excited! It will also be a good way to get to know moms in the neighborhood.
We move into our hippie commune in like 12 days!!!! CRAZY! I am so excited. Today we had everyone over for dinner- I made beef barley stew (I used venison instead of beef) and it was delicious! Side note.... so we had everyone ever to talk about all the details of living together... Just to give you an idea of what moving into a hippie commune looks like here are some of the things we discussed:
- Food- do we share it all? What kinds of foods are staple foods to have in the house
-Furniture- we have this, you have that, what are we bringing???
- Who will be in charge of paying what bills
- we need to open up our joint checking account
-get the security system set up on the house
- internet, blah blah blah
- where will we put this, and that
- how many people will be eating on average together- it will be common to have an additional 4-5 people for dinners on a weekly basis-
-and the list goes on and on and on
It's exciting though. We are going to be sharing our lives with people who love the Lord and have a heart for the broken in Detroit. We are excited to serve our community together. Our home is going to be a refuge. So yeah, good things are happening here.
Well, we are going to play a game of Settlers- it wouldn't be a Monday night without it!

Oh you're probably wondering why I titled it: Me, the Crier- so I gave the announcement at church yesterday about the Mom's group and I talked about how the heart behind starting the group was because so many moms I know feel like they aren't doing it right or that they're failures- and so I wanted us to get together and love on each other and share resources. And while giving the silly announcement about an exciting group, I cried. That's me in a nutshell.

mom 2 mom sales

They have these specific garage sales in Michigan called Mom 2 Mom sales and they are FABULOUS! There are about 50 a Saturday through the Spring and Summer- depending on your location. They are usually at churches and cost $1 to enter. So moms buy table space and sell their used clothes. Some moms still don't get the whole garage sale concept and try to charge $5 for an outfit. Other moms totally get it and charge $5 a bag.
So today I went to my first one since Bentley was born and it was great. I bought him fall and summer clothes- 29 pieces of clothing for under $20. AMAZING!
So anyway, there is no need to spend a lot of money on clothes when you can get it used.

Movie Review: Sunshine Cleaning

My friend and future roomie in the hippie commune :), Leigh and I went to see the movie Sunshine Cleaning at the Indie theatre in Royal Oak last night. Bentley had a night watching the Red Wings and playing Settlers with the men! Anyway, so the movie was really good. It's about sisters who are struggling financially so they start a business cleaning up crime scenes and stuff- better known as bodily fluids and blood. Gross! It's about their relationship with each other and the people around them. I really liked it. So if you get a chance, rent it, pop some popcorn and get out the chocolate. You'll enjoy (I hope!)
Here watch the trailer!

came back to bedroom to find blood all over- cut bled through bandaids onto floor and all over adorable monkey outfit
held onto cut area for over 20 min while waiting for it to clot
heard water start working again!
David came home to care for baby and sent me off to kickboxing...
on my way I realized I hadn't eaten breakfast and became quite hungry!
arrived 15 minutes late to kickboxing (reason for tardiness: see above)
kickboxing and one mile run
returned home
ate bowl of cereal
changed Bentley into adorable outfit number 2
showered and ready- in a total of 15 minues I did all of the above after arrival home!

had a GREAT time with Katherine
Found a shortcut home
Put Bentley in bed

Recipes

We are moving into our hippie commune on May 2! First to move in are Chris, Leigh, David, Me, and Bentley- followed by Micah later in the month and Scott later in the summer.
We are excited.
We also have some needs as we prepare for this time... recipes! I am looking for recipes that are great for large groups of people! On a typical night there will be 6 of us- but often many more will eat in our home...

I really appreciate any and all kinds of recipes- side dishes, main dishes, and just good stuff you want to share with me!

Egg Hunts

Yesterday we had an Easter egg hunt at the park in our community. It was really fun... and a great opportunity to meet people. I forgot my camera, but Micah let me use his... so there are a variety of photographers (including a young child- you'll know his pics when you see them!) And you'll probably recognize my style too- but if you don't, it's about the 2nd half of the album.

Anyway, click the title to view the pics.

a modern day jonah pouting outside detroit

So read my previous blog first- I didn't want my post to be too long to scare people away from reading!

There is no doubt in my mind that God has called us to Detroit... and God has made it clear from the beginning. Yet we ran to our Tarshish- Ann Arbor- and while running we ended up in the belly of a big fish. Jonah was in the fish for 3 days- we were in the fish for 18 months. And it took the same kind of repenting and calling out to God to follow the Lord to Detroit. So here we are. And we're happy here. And God is working here. Yet, like Jonah, I run outside the city, sit on my rock and pout. "Why have you brought us here, Lord? Why didn't you want to use us in Tucson? I am begging for the comfort of friends and family." And I know God is conversing with me- I am not turning my back on him- just sulking about my current state.
So God provides a vine from me to comfort me from the sun- this translates to the YMCA, friendships, a wonderful place to live, etc... and the worm comes to eat it all away- although these things haven't gone anywhere, sometimes in my sulking I don't enjoy the good things God has provided me with... so the worm may as well come along and eaten them away.... at least then maybe I would recognize God's greatness even more.
So there it is... my sin out there in the open. I am still rejecting God's calling...

A Week Later....

I have been saving this post for awhile- first I wanted to edit it, but that will just take too long... so I am going to post as is.... but I want to add a few things.

1. Our time in Ann Arbor was not a waste. We learned a lot about generosity, how to be a servant, and many other things. We also developed some (hopefully) life long friendships with wonderful people.

2. I am praying more diligently to get excited about living in Detroit. I LOVE our new church and new community- and now that Spring has arrived- my spirits are lifted more and more.

Jonah

The book of Jonah is nestled in towards the end of the Old Testament. It's easy to miss- in my 1,334 page you'll find the book of Jonah on pages 916,917. The story of Jonah is a popular one. Follow the Lord, or you might end up in the belly of a big fish. I think even Disneyland has a ride that takes you into the mouth of a fish, doesn't it?!? David and I have spent time talking about our experience in Ann Arbor as our running from God to avoid where God had called us: Detroit.... but this small tale has had more impact in my life than I imagined. So first I am going to summarize the book of Jonah before I babble on with my experience.
So God calls Jonah to Nineveh, but he ran from the Lord to Tarshish and went to Joppa and goes on a ship. While on the ship massive storms come and the other people on the ship are scared and know Jonah is running from God (he told them). The storm gets worse and worse and the only way to make it calm is to throw Jonah overboard--- so over he goes and God saves him by putting him in the belly of a fish... then Jonah calls on the Lord and rededicates himself as a servant of God. So God commands the fish to vomit out on dry land. (There's a sketch for you, Sue!) Off Jonah goes to Nineveh proclaiming that the city is going to get overturned because of what they're doing... well eventually they turn back to God and He spares the city. The End. Nope... that's where I thought it ended, until I read with more care yesterday. Ch. 4 JONAH'S ANGER AT THE LORD'S COMPASSION
There's a title for you. How can he possibly be angry at the Lord's compassion? ?
So Jonah leaves the city and is outside pouting about God's compassion- how he is slow to anger and abounding in love. So he's out pouting in the sun so God provides a vine to shade him from discomfort and Jonahs was happy about the vine. The next day God provides a worm to eat the vine so it dies away leaving Jonah exposed to the heat of the sun. So the last verses in the book are, 10 But the LORD said, "You have been concerned about this vine, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. 11 But Nineveh has more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well. Should I not be concerned about that great city?" I think God is talking about the number of people (perhaps children) in the city who are in need of a moral compass. Anyway... you can write your thoughts about that interpretation in comments if you want.

Ok now read the other post.

Movie Review: Slumdog Millionaire

So everyone has been telling me how I should see this movie, and it arrived on Netflix yesterday. So Scott, David, and I watched it this afternoon. I just finished A Fine Balance for the 2nd time and it is all about India (an incredible read by the way... thanks Jane!) So anyway about the movie... it is really good! I love the cinematography... especially the opening scene. The stories in the beginning are all along the same lines as the stories in A Fine Balance... further revealing the painful truth about India.
So I definitely recommend the movie. The whole find your love and win a million bucks isn't my favorite, but showing the truth about life there is really intense and worth experiencing.
So Steven... I think you should see it... oh and Jane too... since the two of you are all anti Slumdog!

peace

I found our seat on the plane yesterday. I hate planes. They are loud, crowded, and the turbulence scares me.
Bentley sat on my lap, toys in hand as he waved his arms up and down making the bells jingle and smiling with his success. He turned to look at me and give me a large grin as if to say, "Hey! You're there and because you're there and I am safe I am going to keep playing here!" When the plane begins to ascend in the air I give him his bottle and he drinks away, looking up with his large eyes and smiling between gulps. He falls asleep. There was a lot of turbulence around Atlanta. As I began to tense up and fear, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace and wisdom. My child rests in my arms in total confidence that I am going to take care of his every need. He need not fear because I am holding him, providing for him, protecting him... and God was trying to show my that I should have the same sense of peace and trust. So I sat back and studied the behavior of my son... his peace... and imagined myself wrapped up in God's loving arms... taking care of my every need, offering me His ultimate peace... and suddenly I felt safe... and because I felt safe and full of peace, I nodded off to sleep.
